I'm probably before moving to Japan with a friend. We intend to open a business together lol. But the point is not in question. I live in the United States with my grandparents (between the places available), which always have been like parents to me. And I never lived outside the community! Now that I'm grown and I am ready to really dig my feet and go, I realize how painul adjustment for all 3 of us who live more than 20 minutes of each other. So brilliant, so simple, I decided to make it easier for us to stay in touch. And not just e-mails and phone calls do not. I found the perfect phone for me like a mini-computer, the Sony Ericsson W810i, which is EDGE and GSM compatible. As my grandparents did not play funny things on the phone, but also video, photo and receive call me if they want to, I opted for the Z500a also supports EDGE and GSM.
But how can I EDGE or GSM? They are both at a global level? Seriously need help!

GSM, the world is and the phone will work in most parts of the world.
In Japan, it is part of the world, I think the phone does not work. I do not think that Japan is working on GSM networks, I know sisn't few years ago. Things have changed and are different now, but if they did, the phone is useless
